Sleep: The Foundation of Feeling Well
Sleep affects energy, appetite, mood and recovery. Most adults need 7 or more hours a night.
Habits that support better sleep
-
Keep a consistent sleep and wake time, even on weekends.
-
Get daylight in the morning.
-
Limit caffeine in the afternoon and alcohol in the evening.
-
Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.
-
Put screens away 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
Sleep, weight and hormones
Poor sleep can affect hunger signals and make healthy routines harder. Hormone changes, such as those during menopause, can also disrupt sleep. If sleep is a concern, bring it up during your evaluation.
When to seek care
Loud snoring, pauses in breathing, or daytime sleepiness that affects driving or work can be signs of a sleep disorder. Talk with a clinician.
